Basic Setup
1. With the power off, the host loads the game cartridge into their Nintendo DS system.
2. The host powers their system on, then taps on the "Warning" screen and then on the graphic for the game.
Game Selection & Downloading
1. When the main menu comes up, the host taps "Zendoku" (the top half of the lower screen).
2. Next, the host taps on the character of their choice twice.
3. The host taps the multiplayer icon (the second option from the right along the bottom edge of the lower screen).
4. The host then taps "Create Game" (the bottom option above the icons at the bottom of the screen).
5. The host taps "Single-Card" (the top option).
6. The host chooses "Battle" or "Co-Op" and taps their choice.
7. The guest will power on their Nintendo DS system.
8. The guest taps on the "Warning" screen and then on the "DS Download Play" button.
9. When the graphic bar appears saying "zendoku", the guest taps on it.
10. The guest's DS systems will ask "Would you like to download this software? Tap "Yes".
11. When the guest's name appears on the lower screen, the host taps "Send" (along the bottom of the lower screen) to begin the download.
Feature/Options Selection
1. The host selects the difficulty of the Zendoku Grid they wish to play on by tapping on it.
2. The options are: Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert, and Master.
Game Controls / How To Play
1. In Sudoku, a 9x9 grid (comprised of nine 3x3 grids) is shown.
2. Nine different symbols (traditionally numbers) are placed in the eighty-one individual squares.
3. Symbols can only be legally placed if they meet certain conditions.
4. No symbol can appear in the same row more than once.
5. No symbol can appear in the same column more than once.
6. No symbol can appear in the same 3x3 gride more than once.
7. As a result, each of the nine symbols appears exactly nine times each.
8. To place a symbol in Zendoku, tap the symbol (located along the left or right hand edge of the lower screen) to highlight it.
9. To place a copy of the highlighted symbol on an empty space, tap the empty space.
10. If the symbol is placed correctly, it will appear normally in the previously-empty space.
11. If the symbol is placed incorrectly, it will appear in the previously-empty space and will be blinking with a red or yellow shadow.
12. To remove an improperly placed symbol, tap the incorrect copy of it on the board.
Additional Rules For Zendoku Battle
1. In Battle, each player plays with a different, unique Zendoku board.
2. When a symbol is placed improperly, a gift is sent to the other player, usually consisting of a free piece placement on the board.
3. Each time a symbol is placed improperly, the player who placed is loses health on their health bar, further increasing the benefit they receive from mistakes.
4. When certain conditions are met, an attack is sent at the opponent (along with blocking instructions).
5. While the attack is traveling across the rail toward you, you can reverse it by correctly placing a copy of your character's lucky symbol onto the board.
6. The strength of an attack is based on the Combo Meter.
6a. Whenever an attack is generated, the Combo Meter is displayed beneath the character's picture.
6b. Completing a row will fill in the Combo Meter's row icon.
6c. Completing a column will fill in the Combo Meter's column icon.
6d. Completing a 3x3 grid will fill in the Combo Meter's square icon.
6e. When one of the three icons on the Combo Meter is filled in, the attack will have basic strength.
6f. When two of the three icons on the Combo Meter are filled in, the attack will have moderate strength.
6g. When all of the three icons on the Combo Meter are filles in, the attack will be at its strongest, then the combo meter will empty.
6h. Placing all nine copies of a single symbol will send an attack equal to the level the Combo MEter is filled at, but won't fill it further.
Additional Rules For Zendoku Co-Op
1. In Zendoku Co-Op, the symbols are split up between the players.
2. The host is charged with placing the top four symbols on the left side.
3. The guest is charged with placing the top four symbols on the right side.
4. Both players are charged with placing the Yin-Yang Symbols.
5. Either player can remove any yellow-backgound (player-placed) piece.
6. When a player places a piece incorrectly, either player can tap it to remove it.
What To Look For
1. Battle Mode Only: On the upper screen, your health is displayed as a green bar along the left edge of the screen (to the left of your portrait).
2. Battle Mode Only: On the upper screen, your opponent's health is displayed as a green bar along the right edge of the screen (to the right of their portrait).
3. Co-Op Mode Only: On the upper screen, the clock counts up at the top center of the screen.
4. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Panda Symbol is in the top left corner of the screen.
5. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Temple Symbol is near the top left corner of the screen, below the Panda Symbol.
6. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Flower Symbol is in the middle of the left side of the screen.
7. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Sumo Symbol is near the bottom left corner of the screen, below the Flower Symbol.
8. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Yin-Yang Symbol is in the bottom left corner of the screen.
9. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Parasol Symbol is in the top right corner of the screen.
10. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Heart Symbol is near the top right corner of the screen, below the Parasol Symbol.
11. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Snake Symbol is in the middle of the right side of the screen.
12. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the Sword Symbol is near the bottom right corner of the screen, below the Snake Symbol.
13. Battle & Co-Op: On the lower screen, the bar that the attacks travel on before they arrive runs along the top center of the screen.
Overall Goals
1. Complete the Sudoku grid.
2. Send attacks at your opponent. (Battle)
3. Keep your opponent occupied with attacks so they can't work on their grid. (Battle)
4. Work together to complete the grid in as little time as possible. (Co-Op)
