Basic Setup
1. With the power off, the host loads the game cartridge into their Nintendo DS system.
2. The host powers their system on, then taps on the "Warning" screen and then on the graphic for the game.
3. When the Ridge Racer DS logo appears on the lower screen and the Nintendo logo has left the upper screen, the host presses the "A" button.
4. When the Ridge Racer DS logo appears on the upper screen, the host touches anywhere on the lower screen.
5. If one or more game file(s) already exist, select the desired game file by tapping it and then pressing the "A" button twice (the second time is when "LOAD" is highlighted).
6. If this is the first time the game has been played, a new game file must be created.
6a. There will be three available game files. The furthestmost file will be highlighted wutg an oranger background and a blinking red and white border.
6b. To select the highlighted file, press the "A" button.
6c. Next, the game will ask for a name for the game file. The default name will be "DRIVER" but those letters can be deleted by tapping the "DEL" key on-screen.
6d. Tap on the letters that are to be entered. When done, tap the green "DONE" button in the bottom center of the lower screen.
Downloading
1. The host selects "Multi Player" (the third option from the top) by tapping on it.
2. The host then selects "Single-Card: CREATE A Race" (the only option on the bottom row).
3. The host then has three choices of racetracks: Ridge Racer Novice, Revolution Novice, and Renegade Novice.
4. To change between these options, the host presses left or right on the direction pad. When one has been selected, the host taps "NEXT" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
5. The game will ask "Would you like to invite other Nintendo DS users to race this course?" Tap the green "YES" on the lower screen.
6. The guest(s) will power on their Nintendo DS system.
7. The guest(s) tap on the "Warning" screen and then on the "DS Download Play" button.
8. When the graphic bar appears saying "Ridge Racer DS", the guests tap on it.
9. The guests' DS systems will ask "Would you like to download this software? Tap "Yes".
10. When the host's DS says that all guests trying to connect are connected, the host taps "NEXT" in the bottom center of the screen.
Game/Feature/Options Selection
1. The host will then select settings...
1a. The host can set the number of laps to 1, 2, 3 (default), 4, 5, or 6 by tapping on the desired number.
1b. The host can set the number of AI (game-controlled) opponents to 0 (default), 1, 2, 3, or 4 by tapping on the desired number.
1c. The host can set a handicap to On (default) or Off by tapping the option of their choice.
1d. When the options are set to the desired settings, the host taps the green "NEXT" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
2. Guests are informed of their guest number and then tap the green "NEXT" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
3. Guests then select their control/steering method. There are three options that can be selected by tapping on them (and then tapping on "NEXT")...
3a. Easy Play: Control Pad

4. Next, all players select their vehicle and color...
4a. On the left side of the lower screen, there will be six yellow dots - each one representing a car.
4b. Across row one and then row two, the cars are...
4c. After selecting their desired car, players can change their car's color by touching the line on the color bar (below the car's stats) and dragging it left and right.
4d. When each player has their car and color set, they tap the green "NEXT" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
5. Each player then selects their transmission type by tapping on one: AT (Automatic Trnasmission) on the left and MT (Manual Transmission) on the right.
6. Players then tap the green "NEXT" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
Game Controls / How To Play
Easy Play: Control Pad...
2. Accelerate: "A" button
5. Camera Angle: Select button
2. Accelerate: Up on the direction pad or the "X" button
3. Brake: Down on the direction pad or the "B" button

6. Upshift: Left on the direction pad or the "A" button

Drifting Technique 1: Acceleration Drifting
1. Acceleration drifting is the best option while driving at higher rates of speed within the game.
2. As the vehicle approaches the curve, let go of the Accelerate button (see above).
3. As the vehicle enters the curve, begin turning the vehicle and then press the Accelerate button again (see above).
4. While in the curve, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the curve.
5. Straighten out the car.
Drifting Technique 2: Brake Drifting
1. Brake drifting is the best option while driving at lower rates of speed within the game.
2. As the vehicle enters the curve, begin turning the vehicle in the same direction as the curve.
3. Release the Accelerate button (see above) and quickly tap the Brake button.
4. While in the curve, press the Accelerate button again (see above).
5. Straighten out the car.
What To Look For
1. On the upper screen, the remaining time until the next checkpoint must be reached is displayed in the top left corner of the screen.
2. On the upper screen, your current rank is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.
3. On the upper screen, your Speedometer (displaying your current speed) is in the bottom right corner of the screen.
4. On the upper screen, your Tachometer (displaying your revolutions per minutes x1000) above your Speedometer.
5. On the lower screen, a map of the current course (with your car's location identified) is displayed in the top left corner of the screen.
6. On the lower screen, your total time elapsed (so far) is displayed in the top center of the screen.
7. On the lower screen, the current track's lap record is displayed beneath your total time.
8. On the lower screen, your lap times (for both the current lap and completed laps) are displayed (in order) in the top right corner of the screen.
9. On the lower screen, your Gear Indicator (indicating what gear your car is currently in) is displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen.
10. On the lower screen, the steering wheel is displayed along the bottom edge of the screen.
Overall Goals
2. Avoid hitting roadside barriers.
