Basic Setup
1. With the power off, the host loads the game cartridge into their Nintendo DS system.
2. The host powers their system on, then taps on the "Warning" screen and then on the graphic for the game.
3. The host taps Start (the top option).
4. If this is the first time this copy of the game is being played, a Friend Card must be created.
5. If this is not the first time this copy of the game has been played, the host must enter their password.
5a. Enter it by tapping it on the on-screen keyboard.
5b. To shift to capital letters or characters (instead of numbers) for a character, tap the SHIFT button in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.
5c. To use several capital letters in a row, tap the CAPS button near the bottom left corner of the keyboard (above the SHIFT button).
5d. To change the language, tap the arrows to the left or right of the word "English" in the bottom center of the keyboard (to select French or Spanish).
5e. To erase a character, tap the outlined arrow on the far right side of the keyboard.
6. Once your answer has been entered, tap "OK" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.
Downloading
1. When beginning a session, five icons will be on the screen.
2. In the bottom right corner of the screen, tap the top arrow (the one that points to the right) eleven (11) times.
3. There are two games that are playable via Single-Card Download.
3a. The far right icon on the screen should now be for "Crazy Eights" (an "8" inside an eight-pointed shape).
3b. The second icon from the right should now be for "Ninety-Eight" (three overlapping cards).
4. Double-tap on the icon for the game you wish to play.
5. Tap "DS Download Play" (the third option from the top).
6. The guest(s) will power on their Nintendo DS system.
7. The guest(s) tap on the "Warning" screen and then on the "DS Download Play" button.
8. When the graphic bar appears saying "Crazy Eights" or "Ninety-Eight", the guests tap on it.
9. The guests' DS systems will ask "Would you like to download this software? Tap "Yes".
10. When the host's DS says that all guests trying to connect are connected, the host taps "Start" in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Game/Feature/Options Selection
1. The host selects either Standard Rules (default/already selected) or Last Man Standing (they tap in the circle to fill it).
2. The host can decide to show the rules before the game begins by checking the box on the second line.
3. When the host's decisions are made, they tap "OK" in the bottom right corner of the lower screen.

Game Controls / How To Play
1. Each player will be dealt 4 cards.
2. On their turn, players play any card from their hand to the table (by tapping their selection).
3. Every card has a value or effect associated with it...
3a. A - 9: 1 - 9 points are added to the total (an A counts as 1).
3b. 10: 10 points are subtracted from the total.
3c. J or Q: The total stays exactly the same.
3d. K: The total becomes exactly 98.
4. When a player is forced to play a card that makes the total greater than 98 (meaning 99+)...
4a. Standard Rules: ...they lose.
4b. Last Man Standing Rules: ...they're out and the other players keep playing.
1. Each player will be dealt either 5 or 7 cards (depending on how many players are in the game).
2. On their turn, players play any card from their hand to the table (by tapping their selection) if...
2a. ...the card matches the suit (spades, hearts, clubs, or diamonds) of the current face-up card OR
2b. ...the card matches the value (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, or 2) of the current face-up card OR
2c. ...the card is an "8" card.
3. If a player has more than four (4) cards in hand, they can scroll to the right by tapping the arrows on the orange scroll bar on the right.
4. If a player can't play a card...
4a. Standard Rules: ...they draw a card instead of playing one, and then it's the next player's turn.
4b. No Pass Rules: ...they draw until they find a card they can play, and then they play it immediately.
5. When a player is out of cards, they win.
6. Specialized rules for specific cards...
6a. A: The next player loses their turn.
6b. Q: The order of play (clockwise or counter-clockwise) is reversed.
6c. 8: The player selects any suit for that the next played card must match.
6d. 2: The next player must play a "2" card or draw 2 cards. If they play a "2" card, the player after must play a "2" card or draw 4 cards, etc.
What To Look For
1. On the upper screen, each player has a profile picture displayed (the current player's profile picture is bordered in blue).
2. On the lower screen, the playing field is displayed.
3. On the lower screen, the current player's name is displayed in the top left corner of the beige playing field.
4. On the lower screen, the draw deck is beneath the current player's name.
5. On the lower screen, the play pile is to the right of the draw deck.
6. On the lower screen, the current value of the play pile is displayed to the right of the play pile.
7. On the lower screen, the cards in your hand are along the bottom edge of the playing field.
8. On the lower screen, the "Back" button (to exit the game is in the top right corner of the lower screen.

Overall Goals
1. Don't take the play pile total above 98.
2. Force other players to take the play pile total above 98.
1. Run out of cards first.
2. Make the other players draw cards.
