Basic Setup
1. With the power off, the host loads the game cartridge into their Nintendo DS system.
2. The host powers their system on, then taps on the "Warning" screen and then on the graphic for the game.
3. If this is the first time the game has been played, the host will need to creat a new Save Game File.
4. To create the save game file, the host simply taps one of the three circles that appear on Diddy's wheel.
5. If this is not the first time the game has been played, the host taps the save game file of their choice.
6. BEFORE BEGINNING THE DOWNLOAD PROCESS, the host can set a couple of multiplayer options...
6a. The host taps "Options" twice (the bottom right icon of the three).
6b. The host taps "Multiplayer Options" twice (the bottom right icon of the three).
6c. The host can choose for weapons to be turned off or on. The default setting is for weapons to be turned on.
6d. To toggle back and forth between Weapons being on or off, the host taps the word "On" or "Off" to the right of "Weapons" (whichever is showing).
6e. The host can also choose for AI Players (computer-controlled characters) to be turned on or off. The default setting it for AI Players to be turned off.
6f. To toggle back and forth between AI Players being on or off, the host taps the word "On" or "Off" to the right of "AI Players" (whichever is showing).
6g. The host then taps the back arrow (in the top left corner of the lower screen) twice to return to the game menu.
Downloading
1. The host taps "Multiplayer" twice (the top icon of the three).
2. The host then taps "Single-Card Play" twice (the top icon of the three).
3. There will be five options on the Single-Card Play menu.
4. Option #1 - "Single Race" - is the far left center icon of the five.
4a. This option is playable from the beginning and can support up to eight racers.
4b. Single Race is the mode in which you select a track and race it once.
5. Option #2 - "Trophy Race" - is the top left icon of the five.
5a. This option is playable from the beginning and can support up to eight racers.
5b. Trophy Race is the mode in which you select a location and race all four of its cources.
6. Option #3 - "Battle Tracks" - is the top right icon of the five.
6a. This option is inially locked. It is not selectable with the displayed name being "?".
6b. Battle Tracks is the mode in which players battle in a small, confined space with a particular goal.
6c. Battle Tracks can support up to four racers.
7. Option #4 - "Token Tussle" - is the bottom right icon of the five.
7a. This option is inially locked. It is not selectable with the displayed name being "?".
7b. Token Tussle is the mode in which you must go forward or backward along the selected track and be the first racer to possess five coins.
7c. Token Tussle can support up to eight racers.
8. Option #5 - "T.T.'s Wish Race" - is the bottom left icon of the five.
8a. This option is inially locked. It is not selectable with the displayed name being "?".
8b. T.T.'s Wish Race is the mode in which you design a simple track and then race on it.
8c. T.T.'s Wish Race can support up to eight racers.
9. The guest(s) will power on their Nintendo DS system.
10. The guest(s) tap on the "Warning" screen and then on the "DS Download Play" button.
11. When the graphic bar appears saying "Diddy Kong Racing DS", the guests tap on it.
12. The guests' DS systems will ask "Would you like to download this software? Tap "Yes".
13. When the host's DS says that all guests trying to connect are connected, the host taps "Cut Off" in the bottom center of the screen.
Game/Feature/Options Selection
1a. Each player has 30 seconds to select the character they want to race with by tapping that character twice (once to select and again to confirm).
1b. A racer can simultaneously be selected by more than one player.
1c. Next, the host has 30 seconds to select the course to race on. Beneath the map for each course are pictures of the vehicles that can be used.
1d. The host can scroll by pressing up and down on the direction pad or dragging the scroll bar on the right edge of the screen up and down with the stylus.
1e. If the selected course has more than one type of available vehicle, the host then selects the vehicle that racers will race with.
1f. The host can scroll through available vehicles by pressing left and right on the direction pad or by tapping the left and right arrows on the lower screen.

2c. Next, the host has 30 seconds to select the trophy they want to race for.

3a. Each player has 30 seconds to select the character they want to race with by tapping that character twice (once to select and again to confirm).
3b. A racer can simultaneously be selected by more than one player.
3c. Next, the host has 30 seconds to select the battle track to use. Beneath the map for each course is a picture of the vehicle used on that stage.
3d. The host can scroll by pressing up and down on the direction pad or dragging the scroll bar on the right edge of the screen up and down with the stylus.
4a. Each player has 30 seconds to select the character they want to race with by tapping that character twice (once to select and again to confirm).
4b. A racer can simultaneously be selected by more than one player.
4c. Next, the host has 30 seconds to select the course to race on. Beneath the map for each course are pictures of the vehicles that can be used.
4d. The host can scroll by pressing up and down on the direction pad or dragging the scroll bar on the right edge of the screen up and down with the stylus.
4e. If the selected course has more than one type of available vehicle, the host then selects the vehicle that racers will race with.
4f. The host can scroll through available vehicles by pressing left and right on the direction pad or by tapping the left and right arrows on the lower screen.
5a. Each player has 30 seconds to select the character they want to race with by tapping that character twice (once to select and again to confirm).
5b. A racer can simultaneously be selected by more than one player.
5c. Next, the host has 40 seconds to design a course to race on. Players will take turns designing courses. Only the cart can be used here.
5d. To design a course, a player draws the design for the course in the blank area on the lower screen.
5e. The amount of ink is limited to the line beneath the drawing area; when the line is empty, the deginer is out of ink and must start over.
5f. To wipe out everything that's been drawn so far, the designer taps the erase icon (it looks like an empty sunburst pattern) near the center of the lower screen.
5g. When the track forms a complete loop, the designer must mark on the track where the racers begin.
5h. When the start line is entered, the designer taps the giant check mark on the lower screen to begin the race.
NOTE: Power-ups and altitude changes are added in automatically by the game and cannot be controlled.
Game Controls / How To Play
1. Driving/Steering/etc. Controls For All Vehicles
1a. Steer Your Vehicle: Use the direction pad
1b. Accelerate (Go Forward): Press the "A" button
1c. Brake (Stop Moving): Press the "B" button when moving to stop
1d. Use Your Collected Weapon: Press the "L" button while holding a weapon
1e. Power-Up Your Collected Weapon: Press the "X" button while holding a weapon
1f. Throw Away Your Collected Weapon: Press the "Y" button while holding a weapon
1g. Change The View On The Lower Screen: Tap the touch screen
1h. Beep Your Horn: Press the "L" button when not holding a weapon
1i. Change The Lower Screen's View: Tap the lower screen
2. Addition Driving/Steering/etc. Controls For All Carts
2a. Reverse (Back up): Press the "B" button while stopped
2b. Make A Tight Turn: Press the "A" and "B" buttons together while turning
2c. Power Slide: Press the "R" button while turning
3. Addition Driving/Steering/etc. Controls For All Hovercraft
3a. Jump: Press the "R" button
3b. Make A Tight Turn Jump Turn: Press the "R" button while turning
4. Addition Driving/Steering/etc. Controls For All Planes
4a. Reverse (Back up): Press the "B" button while stopped
4b. Make A Tight Turn: Press the "R" button while turning
5. Special Conditions On The Battle Tracks
5a. Fire Mountain: To pick up an egg, fly through it; To put an egg down, press the "L" button while flying low over your perch (Plane).
NOTE: Each egg will take 30 seconds to hatch enough for the eyes to show, meaning you've got 30 seconds to wait for the win.
5b. Icicle Pyramid: To pop an opponent's balloons, shoot them with a missile or get them to drive into a Passive Trap (Cart).
5c. Darkwater Beach: To pop an opponent's balloons, shoot them with a missile or get them to steer into a Passive Trap (Hovercraft).
5d. Smokey Castle: To collect a coin, drive through it (you can carry up to five at a time) (Cart). To deposit coins, drive into your treasure chest.
What To Look For
1. Screen Layout: Single Race, Trophy Race, and T.T.'s Wish Race
1a. On the upper screen, the current lap is displayed in the top left corner of the screen.
1b. On the upper screen, your current rank is displayed in the top center of the screen.
1c. On the upper screen, the amount of time that has elapsed is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.
1d. On the upper screen, the currently held weapon (if any) is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen.
1e. On the upper screen, if you have a Power-Up Token, it will be displayed in the bottom left corner of the weapon icon.
1f. On the upper screen, if you have an Advanced Missile Attack, the number of missiles remaining will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the weapon icon.
1g. On the lower screen (overhead view), your character will always appear in the very center of the screen.
1h. On the lower screen (overhead view), each character's progress in the lap will be displayed around the edge of the screen by a dot of their color.
1i. On the lower screen (leaderboard view), each character's progress in the lap will be displayed on the map by a dot of their color.
1j. On the lower screen (leaderboard view), each character's current rank (as well as any weapons they may be holding) will be displayed on the left side of the screen.
2. Screen Layout: Battle Tracks
2a. On the upper screen, the currently held weapon (if any) is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen.
2b. On the upper screen, if you have an Advanced Missile Attack, the number of missiles remaining will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the weapon icon.
2c. On the upper screen, the number of coins you're carrying (but haven't deposited) is displayed in the top center (Smokey Castle).
2d. On the lower screen, your character will appear as the blinking dot (of your color).
2e. On the lower screen, the Taj coins on will be identified on the map.
2f. On the lower screen, each character (along with their rescued eggs) will be displayed on the left side of the screen (Fire Mountain).
2g. On the lower screen, each character (along with their remaining balloons) will be displayed on the left side of the screen (Darkwater Beach and Icicle Pyramid).
2h. On the lower screen, each character (along with their deposited coins) will be displayed on the left side of the screen (Smokey Castle).
3. Screen Layout: Token Tussle
3a. On the upper screen, the currently held weapon (if any) is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen.
3b. On the upper screen, if you have an Advanced Missile Attack, the number of missiles remaining will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the weapon icon.
3c. On the upper screen, the number of coins you're carrying is displayed in the top center of the screen.
3d. On the lower screen, your character will appear as the blinking dot (of your color).
3e. On the lower screen, the Taj coins on will be identified on the map.
3f. On the lower screen, each character (along with their coins) will be displayed on the left side of the screen.
Overall Goals
1b. Attack your opponents with weapons.
2a. Win the four-race circuit.
2b. Achieve the highest four-track rank.
3a. Rescue three eggs and carefully place them on your perch (Fire Mountain).
3b. Attack all opponents directly to pop their balloons (Darkwater Beach and Icicle Pyramid).
3c. Be the last player left with balloons (Darkwater Beach and Icicle Pyramid).
3d. Collect ten Taj coins and deposit them in your treasure chest (Smokey Castle).
4a. Be the first player to collect five coins.
4b. Prevent all other players from collecting coins.
5b. Race on the racetrack.
5d. Attack your opponents with weapons (and knock them off the track!).
